Batanes Protected Landscape and Seascape




           Characterized by a complex of terrestrial, wetland and marine ecosystem, the Batanes group of islands consist of 10 small islands bounded by the Eashi Channel on the north, by the Pacific Ocean on the east, by the South China Sea on the west and the Balintang Channel on the south. It is one of the last remaining areas in the Philippines having unique natural wave-cut cliffs, cave-like outcrops, secluded white sand beaches resulting from its position where strong winds and fast currents have etched out its distinct morphology.


         There are species  of plantlived in the seascape like Pterocarpus indicus, Boerlagiodendron pectinatus, Neonauclea retuculata, Villebrunnea trinervis, Mallotus riciniodes,etc. There are eight species of plants of critically global conservation status in the batanes landscap and seascape. These incudes voyavoy (endangered), Arius (endangered), kamaya (endangered), narra, and Myristica Philippinensis

       Now only 70 - 60 percent of corals left in the wetlands of batanes which is within the poor and good category. there are endemic birds lived in Batanes PLS including Rallina curizonoides alverzi from Batan; Treron formosae filipina from Camiguin, Batan, Sabtang and Ibuhos Islands. Two new described species of lizards, Draco jarecki, a flying lizard, and Lepidodactylus balioburius, a gecko, and an undescribed species of snake, Lycodon, are also found in Batan Island.
